How to Use the Course Builder — Hacks and Hazards

How to Use the Course Builder

Got a home course that isn’t mapped yet? This is how you fix that. About 10–15 minutes a hole if you’re being thorough, less if you just want to knock out the basics. Every course someone maps makes the app better for everyone who plays there — thank you in advance.

🎁 Submit a course, get a free month of Premium once it’s verified — no tiers, no catch. And the more detail you add (hazards, outlines, not just tee/green), the better your own AI Caddie and Hole View will be the next time you play there. More effort pays you back too, not just everyone else.
One thing up front: this isn’t a “walk the course with your phone” tool — you’re not standing on the tee pressing a button. You’re working off satellite imagery on the map, clicking the exact spot for each thing (tee box, green, bunker, etc.). The more zoomed-in and precise your clicks, the better the data.
1

Name the course

Top of the sidebar — type in the Course Name (required) and Town (optional, but helpful).

2

Find it on the map

Use the Search Location box: type the course name, a town + course name, decimal coordinates (like 37.6177,-120.9995), or even a DMS coordinate if you’ve got one, then hit Go. You can also just scroll/drag and zoom in manually if you already know where it is. Either way — zoom in as far as you can before you start dropping pins. Accuracy beats speed here.

3

Pick your hole and set the par

The numbered tabs at the top of the sidebar pick which hole you’re working on (starts on Hole 1). Tabs light up once you’ve added anything to that hole, so you can see your progress at a glance. Set the par with the 3 4 5 buttons right below.

4

Drop the tee box and green pins

Under Drop Pin As, pick a pin type, then click that exact spot on the map:

  • Tee Box — click the tee
  • Front Green — click the front edge of the green
  • Back Green — click the back edge of the green

Once you’ve placed Front and Back, Center Green fills itself in automatically (you’ll see a dashed marker labeled “auto”) — you don’t need to place it yourself. If you want to hand-place the center instead (say the green’s an odd shape and the midpoint isn’t where you’d actually aim), just click Center Green and drop it yourself — the tool won’t overwrite a pin you placed by hand.

5

Mark the hazards

Quick buttons for the common stuff: 🏖️ Bunker 💧 Water 🚫 OB 🌳 Tree. Click one and it creates that hazard and makes it active — then click the map at its location. Click the same button again later and it creates a new, separate hazard (so two clicks of “Bunker” gives you “Bunker” and “Bunker 2”).

Got something that doesn’t fit those buttons — a cart path, a specific landmark tree, a sprinkler head, whatever? Use + Custom Name to name it yourself.

Want to add a second GPS point to a hazard you already placed instead of creating a new one? Scroll down — every hazard you’ve added shows up as its own button in this same list. Tap + Mark on it to make it active again, then click the map.

6

Draw outlines (optional, but this is what makes a hole look great)

Scroll to OUTLINES: Rough, Fairway, Bunker, Water, Green, Center Line. Click one to start drawing, then click a series of points tracing the edge of that shape on the map — like connecting the dots around the fairway’s border. Click the same button again (or hit ✓ Finish Shape) when you’re done. Need at least 3 points for an area shape, or 2 for Center Line (drawn as a line, not a closed shape).

Bunker and Water outlines support more than one per hole — finish one and it automatically lets you start drawing the next, so you can knock out every bunker on the hole back to back. Hit ✕ Cancel if you want to stop instead.

7

Double check your pins

The pin list near the bottom of the sidebar shows every pin/reading on the current hole with its coordinates. Fat-fingered a click? Hit the next to it to delete just that one.

8

Repeat for every hole

Click through the hole tabs and repeat steps 3–7. You don’t have to do all 18 in one sitting.

9

Submit it

Once you’ve got a course name and at least one pin dropped somewhere, fill in your name and email (use the same email you linked on the app’s Premium page — that’s how we match this submission to your account for the free month) and the Submit Course Data button lights up. Hit submit and the whole thing goes straight to us for review. No file to download, no export step, nothing else to do.

A few extra things worth knowing

  • Your work autosaves to your browser as you go — so a refresh or crash won’t wipe you out. That said, it’s local to that browser only (not a real backup, doesn’t sync anywhere), so stick to the same device/browser until you’re done, and don’t clear your browser data mid-project.
  • You don’t have to finish the whole course before submitting. A handful of holes, or even just tee/green pins with no hazards or outlines, is still genuinely useful. More detail is better, but partial is way better than nothing.
  • Clear Hole (top right) wipes only the hole you’re currently on, not the whole course — handy for a do-over on one hole specifically.
  • Import JSON (top right) lets you load in course data you’ve already got — from a previous session’s export or a file someone sent you — so you can keep building on it.
